Sierra Norte, Riotinto and Doñana by motorhome

  • 4–5 days
  • approx. 430 km
  • From Sevilla

Four landscapes that hardly seem to belong to the same country, all within 450 km: the forests and rocks of the Sierra Norte, the red river of the Huelva mines and the Doñana wetlands. Pick up the motorhome in Seville and drop it off there.

Pick up the motorhome in Seville. Stock up for the first days: the mountain villages are small.

    Cerro del Hierro+100 km

A former iron mine, worked since Roman times and now a Natural Monument: a maze of limestone pinnacles and rock corridors among cork oaks, with easy marked trails.

    Cascadas del Huéznar+5 km

Close by, in San Nicolás del Puerto, the Huéznar river tumbles down tufa steps under poplars and ash trees. The Sierra Norte Greenway, the old mining railway, runs alongside for walking or cycling.

    Minas de Riotinto+160 km

The Riotinto Mining Park tells 5,000 years of mining: the museum, the Corta Atalaya open pit and the mining train along the red river. An almost Martian landscape.

    El Rocío y Doñana+100 km

El Rocío, with its sand streets and its chapel by the marshes, is the gateway to Doñana. Trails and bird-watching trips leave from the visitor centres: flamingos, spoonbills and, with luck, the Spanish imperial eagle.

    Sevilla+70 km

Back to Seville to return the motorhome. If you have an evening left, Triana and the river at sunset are a great ending.

Tips

  • The Sierra Norte roads are winding but easy in a motorhome; dirt tracks are not (and are not allowed with our vehicles).
  • Overnight stays are not allowed inside Doñana National Park: sleep at a campsite or motorhome area in El Rocío or Matalascañas.
  • The Riotinto mining train runs on a seasonal timetable: book before you go.

Best time

Spring and autumn. After the rains the waterfalls carry more water and Doñana has more birds.
